Don’t Go Blind Trying to Lose Weight

According to CVI Feier et al. (2024), medications like Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutides) are generally considered safe, with the most common side effects being stomach issues and risk of thyroid cancer. But as more people are dealing with diabetes and obesity, the close connection between thyroid health, eye health, and overall well-being needs careful consideration before taking semaglutide as a weight loss medication. Originally approved to help control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, this medication is now also known for its significant weight loss benefits. With these dual uses becoming more common, it’s important to discuss the balance between the drug’s effectiveness and possible side effects. Yaah! looks into the various impacts of using semaglutide, especially for those who are more prone to thyroid problems and related issues, specifically black women. By examining how thyroid function affects eye health and vision—topics often missed in regular conversations—we can see why it’s crucial to closely look at how semaglutide affects thyroid function and, in turn, eye health and vision.

Thyroid function is crucial for overall health. Thyroid issues can significantly impact various body systems, including metabolic regulation and potentially influencing eye health and vision through various hormonal mechanisms, making it important for individuals consider the use of semaglutide. Conditions like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can lead to eye problems. For example, hypothyroidism can lead to dry eyes and eyelid retraction, while hyperthyroidism can cause severe vision problems due to changes in eye metabolism.

Hormonal Regulation

Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) play a crucial role in regulating metabolism throughout the body, including the eyes. They affect the function of the retina, optic nerve, and other eye structures.

  • Thyroid produces excessive hormones, can cause eye problems like bulging eyes (exophthalmos), double vision, and sensitivity to light. This occurs due to immune system attacks on tissues around the eyes.
  • An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). While it primarily affects thyroid function, untreated hypothyroidism can lead to dry eyes and blurry vision.
  • In severe cases optic nerve damage (optic neuropathy) can occur. This can lead to vision loss or changes in vision.

Therefore, patients prone to thyroid disorders might experience worsened eye symptoms when using medications like semaglutide that could further disrupt thyroid function, particularly in populations with higher susceptibility to thyroid disorders and related complications like diabetic retinopathy.

Semaglutide prompts the body to produce more insulin, which helps lower blood sugar levels. This mechanism is beneficial for managing diabetes but can have side effects, including temporary vision changes and exacerbation of diabetic retinopathy (damage to the blood vessels at the back of the eye).

Understanding how medications like Ozempic may interact with thyroid function and impact eye health is essential for managing potential risks.  As the discussion around the benefits and potential side effects of semaglutide continues, Yaah! is excited to introduce our Health & Wellness Plan for Weight Loss as a holistic and healthy alternative, launching January 2025.
